The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has, under the Waste Less Recycle More initiative, funded a Regional Waste Coordination role within Southern Councils Group and the development of a Regional Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy. Mr John Mortimer was appointed to the full time position of Regional Waste Coordinator in April 2014.
SCG commissioned Wright Corporate Strategy to prepare the Regional Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy on behalf of participating Councils (Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee). A number of workshops were held to identify and evaluate opportunities for, and the benefits of, regional and sub regional collaboration. A final draft of the Strategy was considered and endorsed by the Southern Councils Group Board on 29 May 2014.
The Strategy is to be considered and adopted by each participating Council. A copy of the Strategy has been provided to the EPA in accordance with the funding agreement.
